Turning the lens aroundWith a long history, beginning as early as Cave Paintings, followed by the ancient Egyptian times and popularized in the Early Renaissance, artists have long chosen to represent themselves as the subject of their work. Creating a self-portrait is an excellent way for young artists to incorporate their personalities, explore personal narratives, and reveal themselves to the world. By the very nature of this undertaking, students are compelled to introspect and confront truths they may not have otherwise uncovered. Given the only caveat that some aspect of their physical selves was portrayed, students were given full license to speak their own stories into existence. These self-portraits show a wide range of representations, as diverse and complex as the students who made them.
