A new take on traditionIn East Asian culture, the Koi Fish has been a long standing depiction in Art. The Ancient legend speaks of Koi fish promised to become dragons if the could leap over the Dragon Gate, and in Japanese culture they stand for luck, prosperity and longevity. This is a perfect occasion to teach students about the Art of Asia, as well as explore the use of oil pastels in a project that bares beautiful results. The students are asked to focus on blending techniques, analogous colors, and the Principles of Design (Unity, Variety, Balance and Movement).
